Understanding Cancer – A New National Media Partnership Assists Cancer Patients in Making Informed Treatment Decisions

Hunt Valley, Maryland—May, 2017—Sinclair Broadcasting Group (SBG) today announced the launch of an innovative cancer information network: “Understanding Cancer.”

Understanding Cancer,
a Sinclair Broadcasting exclusive, is a unique partnership between nationally recognized cancer treatment facilities and a network of over 170 local television stations. The SBG network represents all major broadcast networks in markets across the country.

“The Understanding Cancer Initiative will offer those diagnosed with cancer a groundbreaking resource for understanding their best treatment options,” said Leigh Vaters, vice president of Business Development for SBG.

“Being diagnosed with cancer can be devastating,” Vater said, “and the process of deciding on treatment can be overwhelming and is changing dramatically. Our Understanding Cancer Initiative is designed to meet the evolving needs of both patients and hospitals today.

The Understanding Cancer network will provide a vital link between hospitals and patients. It will target newly-diagnosed individuals with specific information about their treatment options so they can make the best decisions and it will give cancer centers a focused audience.”

Of the approximately 1.7 million people diagnosed with cancer each year, it is estimated that some 250,000 will seek treatment outside of their geographic areas. Because cancer treatment is a $180 billion market, there is a growing trend for top-tier cancer treatment centers to reach out nationally to attract patients from outside their markets.

The only program of its kind, the Understanding Cancer Initiative will provide local support in multiple markets to hospitals that want to reach patients outside their normal service areas and increase market share.
To ensure the success of the Understanding Cancer campaign, Sinclair Broadcasting is working in cooperation with Schulhof, Regan & Associates.  Their firm has over 35 years of experience helping 96 stations in 43 markets across the country execute successful healthcare media partnerships.
